Originating in China, like most teas, Matcha is made from the young leaves of the Camellia sinensis tea plant, which are finely ground so that they can be consumed whole. It was imported to Japan in the 12th century, where it was greatly appreciated as part of the famous "tea ceremony". Our tea is grown in Japan, where the best terroirs and the highest quality Matcha are found today.
Matcha tea is produced in a unique way: a few weeks before harvesting, the tea plants are covered to protect them from sunlight. This increases the amount of chlorophyll present in the leaves, and softens the flavour of the tea, which develop a particular composition of amino acids. Only the young leaves of the "tencha" plant are then harvested and dried, before being ground to a very fine powder. It is these special techniques that give matcha tea its distinctive flavour. Matcha's originality also lies in the fact that the crushed leaves are consumed in their entirety, not just the tea-infused water. As a result, a cup of Matcha provides more nutrients and many more antioxidants than conventional green tea.
Matcha tea is widely studied for its many health and well-being benefits, thanks to its high content of catechins, a family of polyphenols, and EGCG, a plant-derived active ingredient popular for its powerful antioxidant effects. Rich in caffeine, it is sometimes used to increase alertness, and to accompany slimming treatments.
