Practical guides and precautions
The shea tree Butyrospermum parkii is an endemic species of Africa that only grows in the wild. Its fruits are collected from the ground at full maturity, as it is when the fruit falls from its branch that it yields the maximum amount of oil molecules.
The nuts for Guinean shea butter are harvested in natural reserves in Middle Guinea, a region of mountainous plateaus in eastern Guinea Conakry. After harvesting, the shea fruits are depulped and only the nuts are retained. The nuts are washed, dried, and then hand-sorted. They are cracked open to retrieve the precious kernels inside.
The kernels are dried in the sun, and they are not cooked or roasted to avoid altering their fragile molecules and to preserve all the active compounds of shea butter. The kernels are mechanically ground to obtain a brown paste. The crucial step that transforms this brown paste into butter is called churning. Just like turning cream into butter, the shea paste is churned to separate the fats and bring them to the surface.
The final steps to obtain high-quality shea butter include washing, gently heating, and finely filtrating the product. Our Guinean shea butter, made the traditional way, is fair trade. The artisanal expertise of Guinean women is showcased and allows for the production of high-quality shea butter. This ethical sector has been established to contribute to environmental preservation. In addition to protecting against forest fires, this Guinean shea sector creates jobs and income for women. This shea sector promotes the local economy and cohabitation among the communities living in these natural reserves, which are home to shea trees, often referred to as "butter trees." The development and collaboration of various economic and associative entities have equipped workers and modernised production with technical tools that facilitate certain steps, such as grinding.
While shea butter is the ideal ally for all skin types due to its emollient and protective properties, in Africa, its mainly used in cooking, serving as a common cooking oil. In terms of nutrition, its richness in monounsaturated fatty acids makes it a source of healthy fats.

Texture: rich and melting
This shea butter is raw, unbleached, unrefined, and undyed. However, due to the unique terroir of Upper Guinea and the traditional production process, its colour is naturally much whiter than the classic raw shea butter from Burkina Faso or Mali, and its scent is also milder and more pleasant, while still characteristic of an unrefined butter. Its texture is also slightly softer and melts more easily than our Organic Shea Butter.
